Who is The scientist Richard Henderson?
Richard Henderson is a Scottish molecular biologist and physiologist. He was a pioneer in the field of electron microscopy of biological molecules. He won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with 2 scientists Jacques Dubochet and Joachim Frank.
Richard Henderson began studying the structure and mechanisms of chymotrypsin in his doctoral thesis with David Blow at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology. He then further studied protein molecules at Yale University. In 1975, he returned to the MRC's Molecular Biology Laboratory and collaborated with scientist Nigel Unwin to study the structure of bacteria on proteins using electron microscopy. After 1975, Henderson continued to study the structure of probiotic bacteria without Unwin.

In 1990 Henderson published an atomic model of bacteriorhodopsin by means of electronic crystallography in the Journal of Molecular Biology. This model is the second atomic model of a membrane protein. The techniques Henderson developed for electron crystallography are still in use.

Together with Chris Tate, Henderson has helped develop configuration thermal stability: a method that allows any protein which is made more stable while keeping a selective configuration of interest.

In the last few years, Henderson has returned to the practice of single-particle electron microscopy. .

Henderson focused on the study of atomic structure without crystals. He has contributed largely to the methods used in single particle EM, including pioneering the development of direct electron detectors which recently allowed cryo-EM monoparticles to achieve This goal.

Richard Henderson studied at Boroughmuir High School and the University of Edinburgh. He completed his doctoral research under David Blowi at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the University of Cambridge in 1969.
He worked at the Medical Research Council. of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC LMB) in Cambridge from 1973, and director from 1996 to 2006. He is currently a consultant to the Academy of Medical Sciences. In addition to mentoring at the academy, he has hobbies such as walking the hills in Scotland, kayaking and drinking fine wine.
