Horace Greeley is the founder and longtime editor of the New-York Tribune and a longtime political activist. He briefly served as a congressman from New York and was the Republican candidate for the Liberal New Party in the United States for the presidential election of 1872. He died in a landslide, dying 3 weeks after the his wife also died 5 days before the election.
 
 

Young / Before famous

Born into a poor family in Amherst, New Hampshire, Horace attended local schools and was an excellent student. At a young age, he was apprenticed to the Vermont newspaper offices in a printing press in East Poultney, Vt.. In 1931, he decided to move to New York City to seek his fortune. worked for the Erie Gazette (Pennsylvania) and The Spirit of the Times (in New York). There, he became an editor writing persuasive articles, editing a number of publications on Whig Party politics, Greeley gaining attention when he published a weekly newspaper about the election campaigns for many years. In particular, he was the one who contributed to the success of President William Henry Harrison's election campaign in 1840.
The following year, he founded his own newspaper Tribune - a newspaper with the highest circulation in the country through weekly mailed editions.
In 1854 he turned to support the emerging Republican Party, his articles became more popular than ever when writing about the rising Anti-slavery situation of the North and advocating for resistance to hunt the fugitives. federal slavery. He later joined a Republican dissident group that formed the Liberal Republican Party, despite being inexperienced, in the campaign for the Republican nomination by the majority of votes polled before. When the election took place he received more than 40% of the votes in favor, however he died before the electoral votes were cast.
