She graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science from Wellesley College in 1957, and began her journalism career with a publication called Congressional Quarterly in 1959. Then, from 1967 to 1973, she was a Washington reporter for The Atlantic Monthly and from 1973 to 1992 was a reporter for The New Yorker. Between 1971 and 1973 she was the host of interviews for PBS on "Agronsky and Company" as well as a panelist on "Meet the Press" for many years, appearing regularly on NewsHour and other radio and television programs.
From 1972 to 1977, she also served as the Director of the Council on Foreign Relations and was also a panelist for the first debate in the election. elected President of the United States in 1976 and moderated the debates of the nominees in 1984. In 1997, she became a lecturer at Stanford University to teach students at the school.

Her father is William J. Brenner - a furniture manufacturer and her mother is Estelle Jacobs. In 1964, she married her first husband J. Patterson Drewsau, who died in 1970. Then in 1981, she remarried David Webster who died in 2003. Currently, she resides in Washington. DC, USA.
