Jose Antonio Vargas is a journalist, filmmaker and immigration rights activist. He was one of the members at the Washington Post who won the Pulitzer Prize for Outstanding News in 2008 for reporting on the April 2007 Virginia Tech shooting. He is also known for writing for The Huffington. Post, The Philadelphia Daily News, and The San Francisco Chronicle and is the founder of Define American, a nonprofit organization dedicated to identifying Americans.

Vargas grew up in the United States, in 1993 he was sent by his mother to live with his grandparents when he was 12 years old and his grandparents were naturalized US citizens. In Mountain View, California, he attended Crittenden School and Mountain View High School. It was not until 1997 when he was 17 years old that he learned of his own immigration status then he kept his immigration status a secret and used a Philippine passport and forged documents to help him escape deportation.
In 1998, he was introduced by his English teacher to a local newspaper Mountain View Voice for an internship. He then received a scholarship to San Francisco State University to study African-American science and political studies and became an intern for The Washington Post. After graduating from college he began his career at The Washington Post, where he became known for writing and producing the HIV pandemic film The Other City.
In July 2009, Vargas left The Washington Post to join The Huffington Post as an editor on technology innovation and created a Blog "Technology as Anthropology"
In September 2010, Vargas founded Facebook Mark Zuckerberg in An article for The New Yorker and has also worked for the San Francisco Chronicle, Philadelphia Daily News and The Huffington Post. Since 2013, he has been involved in producing and directing films from the autobiography that CNN Films aired in June 2014. In July 2015, Vargas directed and starred in a series. New documentary White People premieres on MTV.
