He attended Victoria University in 1981 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in art before attending a master's degree at Boston University. During college, he served as the Sports Editor for the University of Toronto Weekly.
After graduation, Paikin served as Queen's presenter and correspondent for CBLT, Besides, he is also the main host of the daily news and other works on CBC Newsworld channel. He is also an honorary doctorate holder from many other universities such as McMaster University, Victoria University, Laurentian University and Humber College. In February 2012, he was awarded the title "Queen's Park Journalist" after research on Twitter. In May 2013, he was also made Chancellor of Laurentian University in Sudbury and was made an officer of the "Order of Canada" in December 2013.
