He attended Victoria University in 1981 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in art before attending a master's degree at Boston University. During college, he served as the Sports Editor for the University of Toronto Weekly.
After graduation, Paikin served as Queen's presenter and correspondent for CBLT, Besides, he is also the main host of the daily news and other works on CBC Newsworld channel. In addition, he has also worked as a presenter in private radio stations and other media such as Hamilton Spectator, CHFI. In 1992, he became an employee of TVO who made political news for 2 years. Here he was also the co-founder of Queen's Park magazine which he wrote for 14 years. In 1994, Paikin started hosting on Studio 2 until 2006. In 1998, he gave weekly foreign affairs commentary. He was also chosen to be the moderator and organizer of the federal and provincial leaders' election debates in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2014.
Up to 2006 , the Studio 2 program was replaced by a new program called "The Agenda with Steve Paikin.", in this program, he is also a co-host.
In addition to focusing on journalism, He is also the producer of several feature-length documentaries such as

• Return to the Warsaw Ghetto
• A Main Street Man, Balkan Madness
• Teachers, Tories and Turmoil and Chairman of the Board: The Life and Death of John Robarts

The film " Return to the Warsaw Ghetto" won him the "Silver Screen Award" at the National Film Festival. as well as awards at the Yorkton Film Festival in Saskatchewan and at the Shanghai Film Festival of China. He is also an honorary doctorate holder from many other universities such as McMaster University, Victoria University, Laurentian University and Humber College. In February 2012, he was awarded the title "Queen's Park Journalist" after research on Twitter. In May 2013, he was also made Chancellor of Laurentian University in Sudbury and was made an officer of the "Order of Canada" in December 2013.

He is married to Francesca Grosso, a Canadian healthcare consultant and author of the Navigating Canada healthcare system.
