He graduated from American University in Washington, DC with a bachelor's degree in media journalism. After 10 years as a local journalist, he became a journalist for Fox News Chanel in June 1997. During his journalism career, Leventhal worked as a war correspondent nearly 20 times, including 5 he went to Iraq, 4 times to Afghanistan and 8 times to Israel.
He was one of the first reporters present at the World Trade Center on 9/11 and the first to go live before he went to Iraq. The tower fell to the ground. Leventhal has a father, Dr. Allan Leventhal, a retired psychologist, and a mother, Carol Leventhal, who is a retired director of Greenbelt Cares. He was born into a family of 3 brothers, above him an older brother Scott Leventhal born in 1958 and below him a younger sister named Leigh born in 1963.
