An American author of the twentieth century, he is known for his 1966 novel, Flowers for Algernon. The novel, based on Keyes' 1959 short story of the same name, won the Nebula Award.
His 1981 novel, Billy Milligan's The Minds, was adapted into a 2008 film called The Crowded Room.
