Noonan graduated from Rutherford High School in Rutherford, New Jersey, and Fairleigh Dickinson University. After graduating from college, she became the daily commentary editor for CBS News' Anchorman Dan Rather. From 1975 to 1977, she worked as a news writer for WEEI station in Boston. From 1978 to 1979, she was an adjunct professor of journalism at New York University.
