A critically acclaimed American fiction writer and dramatist, he is best remembered for such mystery novels as The Murders Said Sparrow (1934), Destination Bright (1935), and The Murders Terror Ticking (1935). He received a Newbery Honor for his 1946 work, The Avion My Uncle Flew.
While living in Hawaii, he was hired as an assistant to the president of Dole Pineapple.

He toured with a French circus and was stationed in Europe as a US intelligence officer before working as a screenwriter and a Stanford University journalism professor. He published his first novel of the mystery, Dead High Flies, in 1931.
