A revolutionary performer, journalist, novelist and poet, he is heralded as a Philippine national hero. He is best remembered for novels such as Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. He founded the civil movement, La Liga Filipina, in 1892 after being forced to leave Spain for Manila. for these activities, he was deported to Dapitan.
