An American author of the Confederate Army Returns, he is best known for his Buffalo Bill series, as well as for his 1872 novel, The Masked Spy. He wrote under several pseudonyms, including Dangerfield Burr and Commodore Tom W. Hall.
After the American Civil War, Ingraham traveled to Mexico and joined Juarez's forces in the war against the French.
