American author who wrote the literary classic, Invisible Man, which aimed to address social identity issues facing African Americans during the early to mid-20th century. The novel received an award. National Book for Fiction in 1953.
He was a 1969 Medal of Freedom recipient, and he joined New York University's humanities faculty the following year.

He attended Tuskegee Academy on a music scholarship and spent much of his time in the library reading modern classics. He later moved to New York City to study art, and he became involved in communist circles.
