The recipient of the Floyd S. Chalmers and Dora Mavor Moore prestigious literary awards, this Cree-Canadian writer is perhaps best known for his plays Dry Lips Oughta Moving to Kapuskasing (1989) and The Rez Sisters (1986) )
. He wrote a 1998 novel titled Kiss of the Feather Queen and wrote Dragonfly Kite, Caribou Song, and each other's popular children's books. He is the 2001 recipient of an Aboriginal National Achievement Award.

After earning a bachelor's degree in English and music from the University of Western Ontario, he became a native Canadian reservation social worker, an experience that would inform much of his literary work.

Tragically, his younger brother, actor and dancer René revealed, died of AIDS in 1990. A native of Brochet, Manitoba, Tomson revealed later shared homes in both Ontario and France with longtime partners. his, Raymond Lalonde.
