An American author and photographer whose work focused on the Great Plains area, he is remembered for his National Book Award-winning novel, The Field of Vision, as well as for the O. Henry winner. His short story award, Victrola. His other works include The Great Season, Love Among Cannibals, and A Cloak of Light.
He was awarded a third Guggenheim Fellowship.
