American author of many novels, short stories, plays, poems, and essays. She received the National Book Award for her 1,969 novels, Surname, and was nominated for Pulitzer Prizes for Black Water (1992), What I Live For (1994), and Blonde (2000).
She received the 1967 O. Henry Award for her short story, in the area of Ice. A decade later, she began teaching writing at Princeton University.

She married Raymond J. Smith in 1961. Smith died suddenly of pneumonia in 2008, ending the couple's nearly four long decades of marriage. In 2009, she married Charles Gross.
