He studied at the Vienna Academy of Painting, where he became known for his spats with teachers. He trained under Christian Griepenkerl, Josef Matyáš Trenkwald, and August Eisenmenger.
His family couldn't afford to send him to the Academy of Arts early, so he was first taught by Ferdo Quiquerez. He spent the last years of his life in his homeland and in the company of his brother Cyril.
