He studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, where he was taught by the famous Thomas Anshutz; he then studied at the Académie Julian in Paris with realist William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
He is the son of a Cincinnati real estate developer, and he is a distant relative of the American impressionist painter Mary Cassatt.
