He worked as a porcelain painter in Cologne before moving to New York in 1848. He was allowed to exhibit 11 paintings between 1848 and 1852 at the American Art-Union.
His personal life has not been famous. However, a newspaper record from 1895 reports on his popularity and generosity and his deep love for beer. According to records, his studio was rarely short of beer or friends.
