Who is Novelist Charlotte Bronte?
The oldest surviving daughter in the famous Bronte literary family, she wrote the popular novel, Jane Eyre, under the pseudonym Currer Bell. Her later works include Villette and Shirley.
She and her two sisters, Emily and Anne, self-published a book of their poetry in the spring of 1846 under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell.
 
 

Young / Before famous

She began her education at Clergy Girls' School in Cowan Bridge, Lancashire, England. Health conditions at the school were poor, and her sisters Charlotte Bronte, Maria and Elizabeth, both died of tuberculosis while at the school. Charlotte and one of her two remaining sisters, Emily, later attended a boarding school in Brussels, Belgium.

She was one of six children born to Maria Branwell Bronte and pastor Patrick Bronte. She and her sisters, Emily and Anne, all had substantial literary careers. Charlotte Bronte married her father's deputy, Arthur Bell Nichols, in June 1854.
