Remembered for his pioneering work in the documentary photography genre, this French artist captured the city of Paris in the years immediately preceding the architectural modernization of the French capital. Sadly, he never knew how influential his work would prove to be; Most of his photographs were published posthumously at the urging of American urban photographer Berenice Abbott.

During the late 1870s and 1880s, he pursued a career as an actor. He began his photography career in the late 80s and started his famous Old Paris Collection a decade later.
Born in Libourne, France, to Clara-Adeline Hourlier Atget and Jean-Eugene Atget, he grew up primarily in Bordeaux, being cared for by his grandparents (his eldest parents died during his childhood years). He is a longtime partner of the French stage performer Valentine Delafosse Compagnon.
