He was chairman of the 1928 Nehru Committee. As such, he played a key role in drafting the Nehru Report, the first non-British constitution composed of India.

His marriage to Swaroop Rani Thussu resulted in a son, Jawaharlal Nehru, who grew up to become a popular Indian political figure. Nehru and Thussu's two daughters, Vijayalakshmi Pandit and Krishna Hutheesing, also emerged (as a diplomat and a writer, respectively)
