After serving from 1931 until 1946 as a United States Senator from Vermont, Republican politician who held the position as US Ambassador to the United Nations. As an ambassador to the United Nations, he played a key role in both the formation of Israel and the early Cold War negotiations.
His brother, Roswell Austin, also had a political career, serving in the mid-1920s as speaker of the Vermont House of Representatives.
