In his sophomore year of high school, Steve Prefontaine climbed to 6th place, improving 47 places in the Oregon State Athletics Championships.
University of Oregon coach Bill Bowerman noticed Steve Prefontaine's talent. During his time at the University of Oregon, Steve Prefontaine was almost invincible. Steve Prefontaine won the NCAA Cross Country Championship three times, and the NCAA Track & Field Championship four times in a row.
