Who is Track and field athlete Terry Fox?
Terry Fox is a Canadian humanitarian and athletic athlete. Despite losing a leg to bone cancer, Terry Fox has created a feat that few athletes can do. In 1977, Terry Fox was diagnosed with bone cancer and had to amputate his right leg for treatment. The night before his surgery, Terry Fox's coach gave him an article about a one-legged man taking part in the New York Marathon. The image of that man gave Terry Fox more energy to fight the disease and make a journey around the country to raise money for cancer research and treatment. In April 1980, Terry Fox started the journey "Marathon of Hope" running across Canada with the starting point of St. Jon's, Newfoundland. The journey lasted 143 days, each day Terry Fox ran more than 26 miles (more than 41km). This is a great achievement for Terry Fox because he completed the race with a prosthetic leg. Terry Fox has raised $23.4 million from his "Marathon of Hope" journey.
