Formation and development:
Fandom was founded on 18 October 2004 as "Wikicities", founded by Jimmy Wales and Angela Beesley Starling, respectively Chairman of the Honorary Council and member of the Advisory Board of the Wikimedia Foundation. On March 27, 2006, it officially changed its name to Wikia, because the name "Wikicities" was confusing because many people believed it was a website about cities and not any other topic.
In November 2006, Wikia claimed to spend only $5.74 while generating 40 to 50 million views. This business then spent US$2 million to purchase ArmchairGM - a sports wiki forum.
Wikia announced its 100th wiki on February 3, 2005. By July In 2007, Wikia had over 3000 wikis in over 50 languages.
On April 7, 2010, Wikia announced its 100, 000th wiki. In May 2010, Wikia launched. 1 ad per wiki (advertisement on the margins of other wikis for users visiting there to find) for wikis with less than 20, 000 pages at a cost of $4 to $5 per wiki month.
On January 25, 2016, Wikia launched Fandom, their entertainment service. On September 26, 2016, Wikia announced that Wikia. com will be renamed "FANDOM powered by Wikia" on October 4, 2016, to better link with Fandom's website, although the parent company, Wikia, Inc. , keeping the same name. At that time, the home page of Wikia. com has been converted to wikia. com/fandom.
On August 15, 2018, Wikia announced that it would completely change the domain name to fandom. com in early 2019.
