He began his career as a child actor in 1987, starring in commercials and films, including "The Mighty Ducks" (1992) and "Rob Reiner's North" (1994). In 2015, he attracted international media attention and was criticized for his portrayal of musician Jamal Lyon in the television series "Fox Empire" (2015). Jussie Smollett has also appeared in the science fiction film Alien: Covenant (2017) directed by Ridley Scott as Ricks and in "Marshall" (2017) as Langston Hughes.
Jussie Smollett is gay appearing in TV interview with Ellen DeGeneres in March 2015. In an interview with Out magazine in 2016, Smollett clarified her sexual orientation and said she would find herself a gay man. In the past, Smollett had also been interested in some girls.
