Notable for both his stage and screen work, he is best remembered for his Tony-nominated performance in William Inge playing The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, as well as his fatherly role in The 1961 film Splendor in the Grass and in 1979 featured Norma Rae. He was set to star in the 1960 film Elmer Gantry. However, an accident falling down a New York elevator shaft leaves him to fight (eventually succeed) for his life. Meanwhile, Burt Lancaster is reprising his role as the main character of the film.
