She was the first woman to be nominated for membership in the Royal Institute of British Architects, although her nomination was rejected because of her gender.

She toured Europe as a young girl, being exposed to a vast array of old world architecture and listening to a series of lectures at the Sorbonne. She graduated from Gray's School of the Arts in 1914 with a degree in architecture, although her first discipline was in garden design.
Her father was a supporter of George Wardlaw Burnet and her uncle was the architect Sir John Burnet. She is married to fellow architect and former tutor Thomas Hughes and has three children.
