Prolific Egyptian architect known for creating entire communities using traditional construction methods of mud brick and adobe. Wrote the landmark book on Gourna, "Architecture for the Poor" in 1969.
He was awarded the 1980 Aga Khan Prize for the President's Architecture Prize.

He graduated from King Fuad University in 1926, later Cairo University. He accepted a teaching position at the College of Fine Arts in 1930. His first mud-brick building was erected at the end of the decade.
