Duy Tan, whose real name is Nguyen Phuc Vinh San, is the 11th king of the Nguyen Dynasty in Vietnamese history. He ruled the country for 9 years, from 1907 to 1916. He was the second son of King Thanh Thai. Around 1912, ambassador Georges Marie Joseph Mahé opened the door. a campaign to find gold. Mahé took a gold statue cast from the reign of Minh Nguyen Phuc Chi on Phuoc Duyen tower at Thien Mu pagoda, dug up the Citadel and the king's mausoleum Tu Duc to find gold. Duy Tan vehemently protested this act of the French Ambassador, but he ignored it. Duy Tan ordered the palace to be closed, not to receive anyone. When the French Nunciature put pressure on Duy Tan, he threatened to break ties with the authorities in Hue. In the end, Governor General Albert Pierre Sarraut had to come to solve it, then King Duy Tan agreed to open the gate.
At the age of 13, Duy Tan reviewed the treaty that Vietnam - France signed. He felt that there were many disagreements in the behavior of the French in reality and in the provisions of the treaty, so he sent Nguyen Huu Bai to France to request a review of the treaty. But the whole court did not dare to accept this task. When Duy Tan was 15 years old, he summoned all 6 assistant ministers, forced them to sign the minutes so that the king could submit the process to the nunciature, but these ministers did not sign, had to meet the Queen Mother to ask for permission. stop the king. Since then, he had a grudge against the French colonialists and the court.
In 1912, Vietnam's Quang Phuc Hoi was Phan Boi Chau established. Phan Boi Chau knew that King Duy Tan was a patriot who dared to stand up against the French, so decided to contact. Two leaders of the association, Thai Phien and Tran Cao Van spent money to mobilize their own driver. King resigned. Instead, a member of the association, Pham Huu Thanh, took this position. However, in April, a member of Quang Phuc Hoi at Quang Ngai named Vo An leaked information. On the afternoon of May 2, the French Ambassador to Quang Ngai had a secret telegram with the Ambassador of Trung Ky. After the nuncio Charles heard the news, he ordered the collection of guns at the Vietnamese barracks, put them all in storage, and banned the camp from allowing Vietnamese people to go out. When King Duy Tan went to Cua Tung beach to relax, Pham Huu Khanh gave him a letter written by Thai Phien and Tran Cao Van. After reading the letter, he wanted to meet these two and they met the next day. King Duy Tan accepted to join the uprising. The uprising is scheduled to take place at 1:00 on May 3.
The night of May 2, Thai Phien and Tran Cao Van welcomed Duy Tan at Thuong Bac Wharf and took the king to the village Ha Trung to wait for orders. However, they waited until 3 am and still did not hear the signal, knowing that the plan had failed, they brought King Duy Tan back to Quang Nam. , Quang Ngai. On the morning of May 6, 1916, they were arrested.
Ambassador Charles and Governor-General persuaded Duy Tan to return to the throne, but he refused. The French forced the Hue court to try. Ho Dac Trung was sent to draft the judgment. Tran Cao Van, imprisoned in a prison, asked a messenger for Ho Dac Trung to plead guilty and ask for forgiveness for King Duy Tan. Ho Dac Trung drafted a verdict that blamed Thai Phien, Ton That De, Nguyen Quang Sieu and Tran Cao Van. These four people were slashed at An Hoa. King Duy Tan was exiled to La Réunion island in the Indian Ocean with king Thanh Thai in 1916.
After a period of exile on La Réunion island, because he did not get along with his father, King Thanh Thai, he cut off all contact with his family. Later, he also joined the French army. On December 24, 1945, he took a French Lockheed C-60 plane to return to La Réunion to visit his family. However, this plane crashed near the village of Bassako in the territory of the Central African Republic. Duy Tan and all crew were killed. However, according to many people, this is actually a murder case. Since Duy Tan was about to return to Vietnam, this was a difficulty for Britain in returning the colonies.
On March 28, 1987, his remains were brought to Paris for a ceremony. pray. After that, his family brought his remains back to An Lang, Hue.
