He studied at the first independent studio in the United States, Atelier Masqueray, for three years under the famous Emmanuel Louis Masqueray. He was awarded a scholarship to the Paris Prize in 1908, which allowed him to later study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under the famous Victor Laloux.
