The first mermaid appeared in literature was the novel "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen, first published in 1837. She is the youngest daughter of King Thuy (in some Vietnamese translations). When the mermaid is 15 years old, she will be allowed to rise to the surface, sit on the cliff, and watch the world above. She fell in love with a prince, and she also longed for an immortal soul like a human, even though her lifespan would be shorter. 2 desires intertwine: only when she has the true love of the prince, her soul can connect with humans and become immortal. But her fishtail is the obstacle that prevents her from connecting with humans, so she sets out to meet the sea witch and she gives her a potion to give her human legs, in exchange for is to lose a wonderful tongue and voice. The mermaid suffered excruciating pain when she had human legs, although she lost the ability to speak, she almost succeeded in seducing the prince.

However, due to an ironic fate, in the end, the mermaid was rejected. She will die, unless she stabs the prince with a magic knife before he marries the princess of the neighboring country. But she did not have the heart to do that, so she threw herself into the water and melted into foam. Even so, that was not the end as she continued to exist in the form of a girl in the air.
