He originally intended to become a professional pianist and performed in a brothel in Paris. He also wrote poetry when he was young but kept it a secret from others because it was uncommon for someone of the working class to have any literary ambitions.
He had three children with his wife Margaret, whom he was married to from 1960 until his death in 1986 from cancer. In 1989 he married his second wife Tracy. They had a daughter, Charlotte, together in 1992.
