In 1954, Nguyen Van Quy graduated from the harmonization system at a junior college in Paris. He returned to Vietnam, teaching harmony at the Hanoi Pedagogical College from 1956 to 1978.
His wife, Do Thi Nam Kim, used to be a French teacher for doctors and pharmacists. The couple gave birth to a son.
