When he started composing his first song, musician Pham Manh Cuong took the pseudonym Nguyen Thuong. He released his first song called "Non Afternoon Country Music". After his debut song, he released many other songs, including some popular songs such as: My sister, Schoolgirl, Color of Time... In 1953, The song "Thu Ca" by musician Pham Manh Cuong was released to the public and immediately caused a storm in the music market at that time. It can be said that "Thu ca" is the song that helped him become famous and associated with his name.
The song "Thousand-year-old Thuong Khoi" was composed in 1956. The song is inspired by the song. inspired by the folk song "My sideburns are long and short, we can't love each other for thousands of years".
Composer Pham Manh Cuong is the founder of Tu Quynh Tape Center in Saigon. Tu Quynh music tape center released about 20 music tapes of famous singers at that time such as: Thai Thanh, Le Thu, Phuong Dung,Khanh Ly, Duy Trac, Si Phu, Thanh Tuyen, Carol Kim... Pham Manh Cuong was the first person who brought the production of music tapes into the business.
In 1966, when director Le Hoang Hoa performed the first music program for Vietnam Television (Republic of Vietnam). He invited musician Pham Manh Cuong to participate in the program. And a year later this program officially changed to "Program Pham Manh Cuong" broadcast weekly on Saturday night from 9 to 10 o'clock and lasted until April 1975.
In 1980, he settled in Montreal, Canada. In Montreal, he founded the band Pham Manh Cuong, engaged in performances and business in the discotheque. He also advocated a monthly magazine called Aesthetics.
In 2001, a music collection of 20 selected songs by musician Pham Manh Cuong was published by the Center Thuy Nga was released to commemorate his active life, and it is also considered as a contribution to Vietnam's musical treasure.
In 2003, Thuy Nga Center honored musician Pham Manh Cuong and composers Le Dinh and Truong Sa in the program Paris By Night 70: Thu ca.

Pham Manh Cuong started learning music theory with musician Ngo Ganh.
In 1953, he passed the baccalaureate exam in Hue. After that, he attended the College of Pedagogy and Bachelor of Arts in Hanoi. After that, he returned to Hue and collaborated with the city's Radio station in the weekly student music program as a member of a band.
In 1955, he started teaching at Nguyen Dinh Chieu, My Tho. After 3 years, he transferred to Petrus Ky School, Saigon and stayed there until 1975.

Pham Manh Cuong had a relationship with his wife Nhu Hao. In 1980, Pham Manh Cuong and his two children crossed the sea from Ca Mau and settled in Montreal, Canada. In 1983, his wife and two daughters were reunited on bail, but a few years later their marriage broke up.
