Vern Gosdin began singing at Bethel East Baptist in Woodland, Alabama, where his mother played the piano. He and his two brothers sang Birmingham on radio station WVOK. He later moved to Chicago, Illinois, and joined the D&G Tap activism. Vern Gosdin idol of The Louvin Brothers and The Blue Sky.
In 1961, he joined the West Coast musical movement as a member of the Golden State Boys and became a The Hillme. Later, he and his brother Rex formed the band The Gosdin Brothers. In the 1960s, the brothers rose to fame with the song "Hangin ' On" on Bakersfield International, then "Till The End" on Capitol Records.
