In September 1985, he resigned from The New York Times. From 1986 to 1995, he was an editor and columnist for New York Newsday. In 1992, Schanberg received the Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award from Colby College and worked on APBNews investigations. com won the Investigative Correspondent and Editorial Award in 1999. In 2006, Schanberg resigned from New Times Media.
On July 9, 2016, he passed away after a heart attack.
