Leif Ericson was the first European explorer to set foot in North America.
According to Greenlanders records, in 1003 Leif set sail with a fleet of 15 men and sailed north.
The first land that Leif Ericson and his crew stopped at was covered with smooth, flat rocks and he named this new land Helluland.
Following his journey he found a new land. the flat land with forests and white sand beaches, he named it Markland.
The third land he and his crew reached was favorable for settlement: There were many fishes. large anises in the river and the climate is quite humid, with only a little frost in winter and green grass all year round. That land could be Vinland located at the northern tip of present-day Newfoundland. according to research in 1950 and 1960 by Helge Ingstad. This site is named L'Anse aux Meadows, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1978.
