When he was in elementary school, Armstrong met Mike Dirnt, who was also passionate about music. They realized the passion for music in each other and decided to form the band Sweet Children when they were both 15 years old. Later, the band changed its name to Green Day.
Armstrong is the youngest child of Andrew "Andy" Armstrong and Ollie Jackson. He has 5 siblings, including David, Alan, Marci, Hollie, and Anna. His father was a jazz composer and truck driver for Safeway Inc. He died on September 10, 1982, of esophageal cancer. The song "Wake Me Up When September Ends" as a commemorative gift from Armstrong's father to him.
He married Adrienne Armstrong on July 2, 1994. On February 28, 1995, his husband's market welcomed his first son, oseph Marciano Armstrong. On September 12, 1998, his second son, Billie Joe Jakob Dange, was born.
