Since he was a student at Austin High School in Austin Texas, Carpenter has been an editor of the school newspaper. She later worked for The Daily Texan, the newspaper at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1942, Carpenter worked for Congress and the White House for the Austin American-Statesman. And after eighteen years she wrote about President Franklin D. Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy was like a Washington reporter.
In 1960, Carpenter quickly joined the staff of Lyndon B. Johnson during his campaign for Vice President in 1960 and going into his foreign affairs duties as a press spokesman. Following Kennedy's election, she became the first woman executive assistant to the vice president.
From 1963 to 1969, Carpenter became a journalist by profession and she became the first secretary. for the first lady Lady Bird Johnson. After leaving the White House, she was a founding member of the National Women's Political Caucus and co-chair of ERAmerica.
From 1977 to 1983, Carpenter was a member of the Grand Jury's Peabody Awards Committee.
Carpenter is well known as a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Texas in 1975 and Distinguished Student of the Department of Communications in 1990. She has also been awarded the ProBene Award from the College of Liberal Arts. .
