Hammond was born into a working family in the Birmingham car industry. In the mid-1980s, Hammond and his family moved to North Yorkshire to the Ripon city church. Here he attended Blossomfield Infant School in Shirley. Then he became a student at Solihull School, in high school he studied at Ripon Grammar School. From 1986 to 1988, he attended and graduated from Harrogate College of Art and Technology.
After graduating, he returned to work for a number of BBC radio stations such as Radio Cleveland, Radio York, Radio. Cumbria, Radio Leeds, Radio and Radio Newcastle Lancashire before becoming a host of Top Gear in 2002.
