Pham Thi Hoai is a modern writer, a compiler and translator of great stature for Vietnamese and world literature. She was born in Hai Duong, Vietnam but now she lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
In 1988, her first novel "Angel" was published in Hanoi and was translated into English (The Heavenly Messenger), French, Spanish, Italian, German (Die Kristallbotin) and Finnish. However, this novel was banned from publication in Vietnam.
In 1993, the novel "Angel" in German won the "Best Foreign Novel" award of the Frankfurter LiBeraturpreis organization in Germany. In 2000, the novel "Angel" with its English translation won the Dinny O'Hearn Prize for Literature.
After the novel "Angel", she published essays and two collections of short stories. These are Me Lo (1989) and Man Nuong (1995), Marie Sen (1996). Pham Thi Hoai is the author of many essays and short stories that have appeared in many literary magazines in the United States, Australia, Switzerland and Germany, or in several anthologies of contemporary Vietnamese stories, including: Night , Again and Vietnam: A Traveler's Literary Companion, Sunday Menu (translated into English by Ton That Quynh Du was first printed in France in 1977 with the title Menu de dimanche, while the English version Sunday Menu was published by Pandarus Books at Australia in 2006 and published in the United States by the University of Hawaii Press in 2007).
Pham Thi Hoai is also a famous translator who has translated works by Franz Kafka, Bertolt Brecht, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Thomas Bernhard into Vietnamese. She is also the editor of Tran Dan – Record: 1954-1960), an anthology of Tran's articles. Gradually.
In 2001, writer Pham Thi Hoai founded Talawas magazine on the Internet. This is a magazine with great influence on the community.
