American writer and director specializing in comedies from the late silent film and early sound eras of cinema. He has worked with the likes of W. C. Fields, The Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, Harold Lloyd, and Abbott and Costello, but is best known for his work with Buster Keaton.
His later work was with the short-term division Columbia Pictures, where he wrote screenplays for popular acts such as The Three Stooges.
