Best known for her memoir Coming of Age in Mississippi (1968), this African-American writer penned a work entitled Death: Four Stories (1975). Active in the Civil Rights Movement, she worked for the Congress of Racial Equality; Nonviolent Student Coordination Committee; and NAACP.
She wrote, but was never published, a sequel to her famous memoir titled Farewell Big Too Sweet.
