An American writer and journalist, he is best known as co-author of the 1957 memoir, The Untouchables, which inspired a 1950s television series and a 1987 film. He also has a long career as a sports journalist.
Immediately after its announcement, The Untouchables sold more than 1.5 million copies.

While working as a reporter for United Press International, he was introduced to his Untouchables co-author, Eliot Ness. After several rounds of scotch at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the two agreed to write a book together.
