An English-born author who wrote about her experiences as a Canadian settler, she is best remembered for roughing it in Bush, an 1852 memoir. Her novel including Mark Hurdlestone, The World Before Them, and Flora Lyndsay, and work of children's fiction including The Little Quaker and The Sailor Brother.
She was given her own commemorative Canadian stamp in 2003.
