He was born into the Russian nobility, and with four siblings, was the son of Count Nikolai Ilyich Tolstoy and Countess Mariya Tolstaya. Tolstoy's marriage to Sophia Andreevna Behrs began happily, however his underlying beliefs eventually strained the relationship. He had a total of 14 children.
