Nguyen Truong To comes from a Catholic family, whose father is Nguyen Quoc Thu, a literate person, a famous healer. From an early age, he learned cursive from his father, until his father's death, he studied with the local teachers.
At the age of 27, he was invited by Bishop Gauthier to enter the Tan hamlet seminary, in the land of Doai to teach the bishop Chinese characters and was taught French by the bishop along with European scientific knowledge. In 1858, when he was 30 years old, the teacher saw that he was a young man with will and intelligence, took him to France to create conditions for studying and improving his knowledge. In just a short time, he has been diligently studying and absorbing modern scientific knowledge, understanding the realities of Western society, in order to help his homeland and country in the future.
In 1861 When Nguyen Truong To returned home, while the French colonialists were occupying the six provinces of Cochinchina in turn, he reluctantly worked as an interpreter for the French. In 1862, Admiral Bonard opened a war to invade Vietnam, he asked to stop working for France. During this time, he brought his knowledge to help his homeland. The first thing he did was to guide the villagers of Xuan My, a place where toxic gases and bad soil had gone to a new land, to build a rich village, with roads as horizontal and vertical as a chessboard. From 1862 to 1863, he designed and built the chapel of the nuns' order in Saigon. From now until the end of his life, he wrote a series of testimonies, theses, papers, and submitted many strategic recommendations to reform the country and rise up for the nation in order to wisely maintain its independence. clever but firm.
In this 60s, he continuously sent the Hue court 59 testimonies proposing renovation and building of a rich and strong country. Nearly sixty of these hearings cover all fields, economic, socio-cultural, diplomatic, and military aspects.
His brilliant intellect was far from him in the 19th century. But unfortunately. that, the Hue court was narrow, conservative, closed-door, and for the sake of power and privacy, how could they understand Nguyen Truong To's brilliant intellectual and innovative thought. Mourning for his talent, he passed away quietly in the village of Bui Chu on October 10, 1871.
