He met Abraham Lincoln during the early years of the American Civil War and addressed the meetings in an 1862 article titled "Mainly On the Matter of War."

He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1825 and later secured a job as editor of the American magazine of Useful Knowledge and Entertainment. His earliest published works include such short stories as "Young Goodman Brown" and "The Minister's Black Veil."

He was born in Salem, Massachusetts, the descendant of a judge (John Hathorne) who presided over the infamous Witch Trials Salem. Hawthorne transcendentalist married and illustrator, Sophia Peabody, in 1842. The couple welcomed three children - Una, Julian, and Rose-- between 1844 and 1851
