A Pennsylvania-born historian and novelist, he is best known for his 1966 work, The Devil's Brigade, which was written in collaboration with Colonel George Walton and focuses on the 1st Army Service. in particular, a unit of the US and Canadian armies that fought in World War II. The work was adapted into a motion picture in 1968. His second book World War II themed, Rome Fell Today, was published in 1968.
